Revealed Facts

The team — covering researchers in Canada, the United States, Europe and Australia — found that in countries where the vaccine had been allocated for more than five years, the two strains of human papillomavirus that cause 70% of cancers — HPV 16 and 18 — had declined by 83% among teenage girls and by 66% among women aged 20 to 24.

Genital warts and anal dropped by 67% among teenage girls, by 54% among women aged between 20 to 24, and by 31% among women aged between 25 to 29. Warts fell by half among teenage boys, and by a third amidst young men up to age 24.

More important, precancerous cervical lesions declined by 51% between youthful girls who were screened, and by 31% among screened women up to age 24.

Because it can take several years for an HPV infection to proceed to cancer, the study was the first to include precancerous lesions. It is still too primitive to gather rates of full-blown cancers, but lesions prognosticate them.

Approximately 100 countries around the world now suggest HPV vaccination, at least for girls.

While the outcomes from Nations like Australia, which launched the vaccine 12 years ago successfully; and where it is broadly accepted, were very strong. The researchers alerted against extrapolating the results to poor nations; where there is more limited data since the vaccines were added more recently.

In the United States, only touching half of all teenagers get the full course of HPV shots. According to the C.D.C., although the numbers are constantly rising.
